Political opinion is one of the categories of personal data that European (GDPR Article 9) and Californian (CPRA "Sensitive Personal Information") privacy law treat as more sensitive than ordinary personal data. Handlers of sensitive data must have a specific legal basis to process it and must apply stricter safeguards than they would for a name or an email address.
Because touBill exists so you can engage with government, most of what you do on the platform reveals your political opinions in some way. A bill you follow, a representative you grade, a petition you sign, a stance you take in a debate — each of these is a civic-sensitive signal. This page describes how we handle those signals and, just as importantly, what we do not derive from them.
Here is what we collect or capture, and its visibility on the platform:
Home congressional district is private to your account. It is used for feed proximity and matching you to your representatives, and is not shown on your public profile. You provide it at signup.
Civic score is an aggregated engagement metric — bills read, petitions signed, posts written, and similar civic actions. It is not a political-lean measure and does not reflect what positions you hold on any topic.
"Public" means visible to other signed-in users on the platform. "Private" means the field is not shown on your profile or in the feed and is not shared with other users or third parties. See the next section for what we do not derive from any of these signals.
This is the disclosure doing the most work on this page. It documents what the platform does not do today, so that each "we don't do X" is a specific commitment rather than a marketing claim.
Two things share the word "vote." They are entirely different, and it is worth being explicit about the distinction — this is the single most likely thing for a reader to misread.
Platform voting is engagement on touBill itself. When you tap Support or Oppose on a debate, cast a vote on a poll inside a post, or grade a representative, the platform records that action. These records are public — other users can see the aggregated count on the debate or poll, and by design your individual vote is visible on your public activity feed unless you have deleted it.
Voting behavior — in the everyday sense, meaning how you voted in a real election — is not something touBill records, receives, or can derive. There is no integration with voter files, ballot systems, or any government or third-party voting data source. The platform has no access to your election-day choices.
If someone tells you "touBill tracks your voting behavior," they are wrong. touBill tracks your engagement with civic content on the platform. The platform has no window into how you actually vote.
Your district determines which posts get proximity ranking. Your Civic Lens tier determines how much content from outside your usual interests appears. Your recent activity — topics you read, bills you follow — influences relevance ranking. Your follow graph influences which authors' posts appear. The full mechanics are documented in the Privacy Policy's "How Your Feed Works" section. Nothing on this page adds a new derivation — this is a pointer, not a promise of anything undisclosed.
